How To Avoid Common Plumbing Problems

Jan 21, 2022

Most people only discover they have plumbing issues when it's too late. Blocked drains, burst pipes, flooding and sewerage issues can cause major damage and mess - and they often happen at the worst possible time.

That is why it is always best to prevent plumbing issues from occurring in the first place. By recognising the signs of minor problems, you can stop major problems from happening at all by calling in the professionals. Some of the most common plumbing issues and ways you can prevent them include:

Blockages In Your Drains Or Toilet

The best way to prevent blocked drains (or a blocked toilet) is to watch what you put down the drains in the first place. In the kitchen, only water and soap should go down the drain. In the bathroom, only toilet paper, water and human waste should be flushed.

Common causes of blockages are substances like food, grease and baby wipes in the toilet, which do not break down the same way toilet paper does. Developing good habits with your drains is the key to preventing blockages. If you notice slow-running drains, strange smells or gurgling, call in a plumber ASAP.

Leaking Taps

Not only are dripping taps annoying, but they can also be highly expensive if left unchecked. A single leaking tap can waste up to 750 litres of water a month while a leaking toilet can waste a staggering 5000 litres. This problem is caused by worn out washers, so the issue can be prevented by changing them regularly. If you don't know how, get a plumber in to change one for you and show you how it's done.

Water Heater Failure

Nobody likes a cold shower in the middle of winter, so you want to ensure your water heater is properly inspected and maintained to prevent any issues at the worst possible time. If they are not regularly maintained, they can develop leaks, build up mineral deposits or fail completely.

It is not advised to try and work on your heater by yourself as the combination of gas, electrics and water can be dangerous. Ensure your water heater is inspected at least once every couple of years.

Low Water Pressure

Low water pressure can happen all of a sudden or gradually, but the end result is the same - frustrating showers and sprinklers that don't cover the lawn. There are a few reasons why water pressure can become an issue. It could be a problem with your water main, blockages in your pipes or leaks in your walls or underground.

If you notice any degradation in your water pressure, it is time for a plumbing inspection. Because there are so many different causes, you will need a licensed and insured plumber to use commercial equipment to discover and fix the problem.
